As the months of summer transition into fall, many of us are wringing the last days of sun fun from our outdoor settings. But the clashing fronts of seasonal weather may mean moments of pleasure are not all your wringing out. Spectacular storms and sometimes days of rainy weather characterize the transitional season, particularly if you live in one of the wetter areas of the country or are camping outside of your RV in the midst of a storm.
But rain doesn’t have to dampen your outdoor pleasure. Planning the right spaces and furnishing them with the proper furniture that can withstand moisture adds up to extra days of enjoying fresh air and also less maintenance, clean up, and expense. When choosing outdoor furnishings for rainy climates, some of the primary factors you should consider are easy maintenance, weight and ease of movement, style and appearance, and comfort. But, of course, moisture resistance is the most important factor. If you’re looking for the best furniture for wet climates, you might consider the following materials:
- Cast aluminum is one of the best metal materials for outdoor use because it lacks iron and thus doesn’t rust. Its lightweight also makes for easy movement if you decide to store it in winter.
- Wrought iron is also a good option for metal furniture as most wrought iron is painted in a powder coating that should last for nearly 20 years. Its drawback is that it is heavier and thus much harder to move. You must also be concerned about abrasions in the coating that might allow rust to form.
- Stainless steel can also be a good choice for rain resistant furniture, particularly with the new coatings being used to protect the surface. Steel furniture is strong, elegant, and lighter than wrought iron.
- Teak furnishings are a great choice for those who love wood pieces. It is naturally water resistant, does not rot or warp, and is beautiful when finished properly. Ipe wood is also another excellent choice for those who insist on wood. Its high levels of naturally occurring oils not only make it water resistant but also protect it from insect damage. Other decent options for wood include acacia and cedar.
- Wicker is lightweight, durable, long lasting, and weather resistant. Today’s wicker is made from a synthetic resin weave applied over a metal frame. It requires very little maintenance and is not only water resistant but is also UV tolerant.
- Polywood furniture is created from recycled plastics and has the appearance of real wood. But because it is a plastic lumber, it is highly water resistant and easy to clean.
