RV Daycation: How to pack your RV for a day trip

With COVID-19 putting limitations on international travel, many holidaymakers are looking to RV travel to get some time away from home. Once you have rented (or purchased) and RV, there are only a couple of things left to do. You need to plan a route for your day trip and start packing your RV with all the right equipment.

If you are looking to prep your vehicle for a day trip, there are some handy essentials you will want to take with you. Of course, everybody will also have their own personal comforts they cannot live without!

Here’s a list of things you might want to consider adding to your RV for a day trip:

Chargers for your electronics – Nowadays, nobody likes to be disconnected from the world for too long. However, if your trip is being made in the name of totally abandoning your responsibilities and emails for a day, then definitely skip this one. Otherwise, it might be a good idea to make sure you have a fully-charged cell phone in case of emergencies.

Fans if you’re in a hot area – Be careful if you are taking your RV on a day trip to a state like Arizona in the summertime. Things can get very warm, very quickly. Your vehicle’s built-in A/C unit might be enough to tackle mild heat, but will not be efficient against desert climates. Make sure to bring fans to increase air flow. Tip: The reverse is true if you’ll be staying somewhere that gets freezing! Bring a heated blanket or thermal clothing if you know it’s going to be cold.

Important documents – This might not be the most exciting thing to pack, but remember to keep your RV’s registration and insurance information to hand. You might also want to pack any roadside assistance information or campground reservations in the same folder.

RV repair kit – Your vehicle is your second home. Treat it like one! You will need to carry a toolbox with you that contains a hammer, screwdriver, tape, tire pressure gauge and any other tools that might come in handy when your RV needs some care.

Entertainment – You likely won’t be driving your RV alone, so you need to put some thought into how your passengers will be entertained during your day trip. If you have kids in the RV, definitely think hard about this. Ideas to consider include: a screen to watch movies, a laptop, board games, books, playing cards and coloring books. Going to be spending some time outdoors? Consider outdoor entertainment options like sports balls, a volleyball net, soccer goals or squirt guns.

Refrigerator and food – Make sure you have a working refrigerator to store food and drink that you’re going to need for the day. Pack everyone’s favorite snacks and you’ll be winning half the battle.
